Alexander Rahr

A graduate of Munich University, German international political scientist Alexander Rahr was born March 2, 1959 in Taipei, Taiwan.

His father was Gleb Alexandrovich Rahr, a prominent figure in the white emigration; his mother was Sofia Vasilievna Rahr (Orekhova).

А. A. Rahr is the director of Russia-Eurasia programs of the German Foreign Policy Society.
Member of the steering committee of the St. Petersburg Dialogue Forum.
Professor emeritus at MGIMO.
Member of the Board of YES (Yalta European Strategy).
Member of the Valdai Club.
Holder of the highest award of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesverdienstkreuz) for contribution to the development of German-Russian relations.

А. Rahr is the author of political bestsellers: biography of Mikhail Gorbachev (1986), the books «A German in the Kremlin» (2000), «Russia presses for gas», «Putin after Putin. Capitalist Russia on the Threshold of a New World Order» (2008).

In 1947, prominent Soviet scientists,military and public figures initiated the creation of the All-Union Society for the dissemination of political and scientific knowledge. Subsequently the Society was briefly called Znanie, but throughout its history it has been engaged in both scientific and political enlightenment. This tradition is continued by the International Association «Znanie», which in 1991 became the successor of the All-Union Society.
